A new year can bring renewed excitement and enthusiasm for your business. January sometimes feels a little bit like a first date. Everything seems shiny and new. By the fourth quarter, the honeymoon’s over. Over the year, we’ve collected mental lists of things that went well and other things that didn’t go so well. And it’s human nature to focus on the latter, which can dull our shine. So how do you keep up the momentum? How can you achieve your goals for your small businesses and carry those fluttery butterfly feelings throughout the year?
Oftentimes, it requires bravery to pursue your dreams. Maybe you don’t know all the pieces you need to know—yet. Even so, you can learn them. Taking your business in a direction new can feel like you have one foot stepping off a mountain, hoping that you can fly. Have the courage to say, “I can do this.” Lean into what you already know, trust yourself, and then take action. That action will give you the confidence you need to keep moving forward toward your goal.
But what about when moving forward begins to feel like drudgery? How can you get back to a place where running your business feels like something you want to do rather than something you have to do? It can help take a close look at everything you’re doing in your business. Which activities are consistently generating profits? How can you leverage what’s already working and eliminate distractions? Once you’ve determined which tasks are most important, set up systems around those core tasks to make them easy.

How to Meet Your Small Business Goals
- Set small, achievable goals. Whether you’re learning a new skill, designing a website, or writing a book, working even 30 minutes a day toward your goal will propel you forward. Decide what small steps you can commit to. Then, schedule time on your calendar every day and stick to it!
- Get an accountability partner and/or build a team. An accountability partner who checks in regularly can help keep you on target. Likewise, if you have a team, they depend on you to provide direction and move the needle forward. Either way, when you know someone will be asking about your progress—or even depending on it—you’re more likely to stay focused.
- Stepping back and change your scenery. When you work from home, it’s easy to become distracted by family members or household tasks. Find an Airbnb, a small cabin, or whatever your budget allows. Getting away from it all, even for a day or two, can help you reevaluate your business and clarify your goals.
